In-salon toner, and the one at home.

You bought something to tone at home, because it seemed sensible and because someone recommended it. Either it did almost nothing, or it did too much and left your blonde dull. Both outcomes make you feel like you cannot be trusted with your own hair.

What you might have been told

That a home toner is the same thing in a smaller bottle. That if the salon can do it, you can maintain it. That using more, or leaving it longer, gets you closer to the salon result.

Here’s what’s actually happening

They are two different jobs with similar names. The toner laid in the chair is mixed for your hair on the day, for how light it went, where it is warmest, and how long it needs to sit. It is placed where it is needed and not where it is not. What you buy at home is one fixed strength for everybody, and it works on the outside of the hair only, evenly, whether or not even is what your hair wants. That is why it can look like nothing happened, and also why it can go too far. Neither result means you did it wrong. It means a general product met a specific head of hair.

It’s no wonder you didn’t know

They are sold as the same idea, in the same aisle, with the same words on the front. Nobody explained that one is mixed for you and the other cannot be. So when it did not work, or worked too well, the only available explanation was that you had misused it. It is no wonder you did not know. That was never yours to work out alone.

What this means for you

Use the one at home for what it is good at, which is keeping the surface fresh between visits, lightly, once or twice a week and never every wash. Leave the actual toning to the chair, where it can be mixed for what your hair is doing that day. That is the split. One is a top-up, the other is the work. Your colour is one part of it. Great hair is not one visit. The plan is what makes it last, and the plan is colour, cut, treatments and home care, all held on one rhythm.
