The three kinds of colour.
You booked a colour. Your friend booked a colour. You both left happy and, three months on, hers still looks good and yours needs doing again. Same word, two completely different things.
What you might have been told
That colour is colour, and the difference is mostly the shade you pick. That the choice is about what you want it to look like on the day, and the upkeep is roughly the same whatever you choose.
Here’s what’s actually happening
There are three different things happening under the same word, and each one leaves your hair in a different state afterwards. **Colour that adds**, laid over what you have to give richness, depth or shine. It asks the least of the hair and it fades rather than growing out, so it needs refreshing but never rescuing. **Colour that takes out**, where the colour already there is removed to go lighter. It asks the most, it uncovers the warmth underneath, and it leaves a line where it grows out that will need managing on a rhythm. **Colour that blends**, placed to grow out softly on purpose, so the line never arrives in the first place. The look on the day is only part of the decision. What you are really choosing is what the next six months ask of you.
It’s no wonder you didn’t know
The menu does not say any of this. It lists services and prices, and the conversation about upkeep tends to happen after the work, not before it. So you chose on the picture, which is the only information anyone gave you. It is no wonder you did not know. That was never yours to work out alone.
What this means for you
It means the right question is not "what do I want it to look like", it is "what do I want to be doing about it in three months". If you travel, or hate frequent appointments, blending is built for you. If you want the brightest version and you are happy to be in every few weeks, taking it out will give you that. There is no better or worse here. There is only honest about which one you are actually choosing, and we will have that conversation before anything is mixed. Your colour is one part of it. Great hair is not one visit. The plan is what makes it last, and the plan is colour, cut, treatments and home care, all held on one rhythm.
