Blonde lesson · 2 minutes

What the sun does to your blonde.

You left the salon with exactly the blonde you wanted. Two weeks later it is warmer, and you have not done anything differently. You are probably wondering what you did wrong at home. Nothing.

What you might have been told

That you need a better shampoo. That blonde just goes warm and there is nothing to be done. That if you had looked after it more carefully it would have held. All of that puts the job on you, at home, after the fact.

Here’s what’s actually happening

When hair is taken lighter, it uncovers the warmth that sits underneath, the gold and the orange. That warmth is the canvas. The toner your colourist lays on top is what cancels it, and the toner is a layer, not a permanent change. The sun here works on that layer directly. It wears the tone away and lets the warmth come back up through it, faster than the same sun would in a cooler country, and faster still if you are outdoors, swimming, or driving with the light on one side of your head. So the blonde is not going warm. The layer that was holding the warmth down is being worn away, and the canvas underneath is coming back into view. That is a very different thing, and it has a different answer.

It’s no wonder you didn’t know

Nobody explains the toner is a layer. You are shown a beautiful result and sent home with a bottle, which quietly suggests that keeping it is a home-care job. So when it drifts, the only conclusion available is that you failed at the home-care job. It is no wonder you did not know. That was never yours to work out alone.

What this means for you

Protection outdoors matters more here than the shampoo does. A protectant made for hair, a hat on the worst days, and rinsing after the pool or the sea rather than letting it dry in. Then the toner gets re-laid on rhythm, before the warmth ever surfaces, rather than after you have noticed it. Your blonde stops swinging between right and wrong, and simply stays where you like it. Your colour is one part of it. Great hair is not one visit. The plan is what makes it last, and the plan is colour, cut, treatments and home care, all held on one rhythm.
