Why hard water is quietly changing your hair.
Your colour looks duller than it should, and it is fading faster than it ever used to. Your hair feels rough or slightly filmy when you rinse it, as though something is sitting on it that will not wash away. You have changed nothing about how you care for it, and yet it does not feel like your hair anymore. It is not you, and it is not your hair giving up.
What you might have been told
That your hair has just changed. That you are washing it too often, or not using the right shampoo. That dullness is what happens with age, or with colour, and there is nothing to be done about it.
Here’s what’s actually happening
The water here is hard. That means it carries a high load of minerals, and it sits at around pH 8.4, which is far more alkaline than your hair likes. Every time you shower, those minerals are left behind on your hair, and they build up into a fine film over the surface. That film is the single biggest reason your colour does not last. It dulls the shine, it wears and muddies the tone so the colour reads wrong, and it roughens the surface so the hair feels filmy instead of smooth. Think of it the way a fine film of sunscreen and city air builds up on your skin through the day and leaves it looking grey and flat until it is properly cleared. Your hair is doing the same thing, quietly, every single wash. None of that is your routine failing. It is the water, working on your hair between visits.
It’s no wonder you didn’t know
Nobody sat you down and told you that the water itself was changing your hair before any of us get to it. You were sold a colour, not the plan that protects it from the water it lives in. Hard water is invisible, it does its work slowly, and there is no reason you would ever have connected it to the dullness in the mirror. It is no wonder you did not know. That was never yours to work out alone.
What this means for you
Because the cause is the water, the answer is to clear it and defend against it, not to keep re-colouring over the top. A Detox clears the mineral film away so the colour reads true again and the hair feels like itself, smooth instead of coated. A water filter at home then takes the minerals out at the source, so they stop rebuilding every time you shower and your colour stops fading before its time. That water filter is not an extra, it is the insurance on everything we do in the chair. The colour is made in the chair. The plan is what holds it against the water. Your colour is one part of it. Great hair is not one visit. The plan is what makes it last, and the plan is colour, cut, treatments and home care, all held on one rhythm.
