Toner does not sit on top of your hair like paint. It works with whatever is already there, and what is already there changes between every visit. Six weeks of sun has brought the warmth a little further up. The water has left more of a film on some sections than others. The ends are thirstier than the roots and will always take tone faster and hold it differently. So the same mix, on hair that has lived six weeks, gives a slightly different answer. That is not a mistake. It is the honest arithmetic of putting a fixed thing onto a surface that keeps moving.
It’s no wonder you didn’t know
Nobody tells you this because it sounds like a get-out. So you were left with two possible conclusions, that you failed to explain yourself, or that your colourist was inconsistent, and neither of those is true. It is no wonder you did not know. That was never yours to work out alone.
