Why bond protection is not an upgrade.

It was offered with your colour and it sounded like the extra. You said no, quite reasonably, because nobody explained what it was for and it arrived at the moment you were already deciding about money.

What you might have been told

That it is a treatment you can add if you want the full experience. That it is nice to have. That your hair is in good condition so you probably do not need it. All of which frames it as a finishing touch on top of the colour.

Here’s what’s actually happening

Inside every strand there is a structure holding it together, like the framework under skin that keeps it firm. Going lighter, and colour generally, works by opening the hair up, and that puts the structure under strain. It is not damage in the sense of something going wrong. It is what the work costs. Bond protection goes in with the colour, while that is happening, and supports the structure through it. That is the whole point of the timing. It is not added afterwards to improve the result. It is in the bowl so the hair comes out of the process stronger than it otherwise would. Offered as an extra at the end, it sounds optional. Understood as part of the colour, it is the thing that decides whether your hair can take being coloured again in eight weeks.

It’s no wonder you didn’t know

It gets offered at the till or in the chair as a yes-or-no, alongside things that genuinely are extras, and in that sentence it sounds like one. Nobody had time to explain that it is the foundation rather than the finish. It is no wonder you did not know. That was never yours to work out alone.

What this means for you

It changes what you are deciding. Not whether to treat yourself, but whether your hair can keep doing this. A woman who protects the structure every time can stay blonde for years. A woman who never does reaches a point where her hair cannot take the next appointment, and the conversation becomes about cutting rather than colouring. Your stylist will tell you how much your hair needs, and it is not the same amount every visit. Your treatments are one part of it. Great hair is not one visit. The plan is what makes it last, and the plan is colour, cut, treatments and home care, all held on one rhythm.
