Why your hair snaps after colour.

You went lighter, and a while later the little broken pieces started showing up, short ones at the crown that never used to be there. When your hair is wet it stretches like elastic before it settles. You have started to think you did this, that you pushed it too far and ruined your own hair.

What you might have been told

That you went too light and this is the price. That bleach simply wrecks hair and there is nothing to be done but cut it off and wait it out. That the breakage is proof you should have known better.

Here’s what’s actually happening

Inside every strand there is a network of strength that holds it together, the framework that keeps it firm the way good structure keeps skin firm. Going lighter is a real thing you ask of the hair. To take the colour out, some of that inner strength has to be spent, and unless it is deliberately put back, the strand is left holding itself together with less than it had. That is what you are feeling. When strength is low the strand goes soft and stretchy when wet, that elastic pull before it snaps, and the weakest points give way as those short broken pieces at the crown. It was never that your hair was too weak to go lighter. It was that the strength it asked for was never given back.

It’s no wonder you didn’t know

Nobody told you that going lighter draws on something inside the strand that has to be rebuilt, not just coloured over. You were handed a colour result and sent home, with nothing put back and no plan to hold what going lighter had spent. So of course it started to snap. That was never yours to work out alone. The rebuild was the salon’s job to build into the plan, and it was left out.

What this means for you

Snapping like this is answered by rebuilding the strength inside the strand, not by cutting the ends and hoping. Trimming tidies what has already broken, it cannot put strength back into what is left. At your consultation your stylist reads what your hair is doing and, where the strand has been weakened by colour, prescribes the rebuild before anything else, so the hair has something sound underneath it again. And going forward the strength is built into the plan alongside the colour, given back each time some is spent, the way good skincare answers what a treatment asks of the skin. Rebuilt and kept up, the snapping settles, because the strand is finally being held together from the inside. Your treatments are one part of it. Great hair is not one visit. The plan is what makes it last, and the plan is colour, cut, treatments and home care, all held on one rhythm.

The Tara Rose Truth

You did not damage your hair. The strength was simply never rebuilt as part of the plan.
